This is a Hurricane Lowell information update for Wednesday 09-02-2026 at 08:31 AM.

As of 5:00 am this morning Hurricane Lowell was located approximately 455 miles south southeast of Hilo and moving west at 10 mph.

Lowell is currently a category 4 hurricane and expected to strengthen today and possibly upgrade to a category 5.

Lowell is generating sustained winds of up to 155 mph with hurricane force winds extending outward from the center up to 35 miles and tropical storm force winds extending outward up to 90 miles.

On the current forecast track, Hurricane Lowell is expected to pass far to the south of Hawaii island and not present with any threat of severe weather impacts.

In addition to Hurricane Lowell, Hurricane Karina is also being monitored closely and currently is not expected to present with any threat to Hawaii Island.

Hurricane Karina is currently located approximately 1455 miles east of Hilo and moving west northwest at 10 mph.

Karina is a category 4 hurricane producing winds up to 145 mph.

The current forecast shows Karina maintaining a northwest track and passing far to the northeast of the state and begin to weaken over the next few days.

Both Hurricane Lowell and Karina are not expected to present with any severe weather impacts to the state, and will continue to be monitored closely.

The development of these systems reminds us that we are expected to have an active hurricane season with a higher-than-average number of tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific.
