Consider getting a COVID-19 test when you have:

  • Symptoms of COVID-19;
  • Had close contact (within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes) with someone with confirmed COVID-19; or
  • Been asked or referred to get testing by a healthcare provider or the health department

If you do get tested, you should self-quarantine at home pending test results and follow the advice of your health care provider.

If you test positive, take protective steps to prevent others from getting sick.

If you test negative, you probably were not infected at the time your sample was collected. The negative result only means that you did not have COVID-19 at the time of testing or that your sample was collected too early in your infection. You could be exposed to COVID-19 after the test and then get infected and spread the virus to others. If you have symptoms later, you may need another test to determine if you are infected with the virus that causes COVID-19.

Here are 10 tips for protecting yourself when caring for someone who is sick with COVID-19 at home:

1) 🧍↔️ 🦠 Limit contact. If possible, have the person who is sick use a separate bathroom and bedroom. Do not allow any visitors.

2) 🤒 Watch for warning signs. Contact the person’s healthcare provider if symptoms get worse. Warning signs: trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, newly developed confusion, difficulty arousing from sleep, bluish lips or face.

3) 🍛 Prevent the spread of germs by eating in separate rooms or areas.           Wash dishes and utensils using gloves, soap and hot water or in a dishwasher

4) 🥤 Avoid sharing personal items, such as dishes, glasses, silverware, towels, bedding, or electronics (like a cell phone) with the person who is sick.

5) 😷 Ask the sick person to put on a mask before you enter their room or whenever around other people.

6) 🧼 Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

7) 🧤 Wear disposable gloves when touching or having contact with the sick person’s body fluids or when handing their clothing and linens. Throw gloves into a lined trash can and always wash hands immediately after removing gloves.

8) 🧽 Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items, such as doorknobs, light switches, handles, toilets, faucets, and electronics, everyday.

9) 🗑️ Dedicate a lined trash can for the person who is sick. Use gloves when removing garbage bags and handling/disposing of trash. Wash hands afterward.

10) 🌡️ Track your own health. Stay home and monitor your health for COVID-19 symptoms while caring for the person who is sick. You can leave home 14 days after the person who is sick meets the criteria to end their isolation.
