More Problems Mount Along Honolulu Rail Track Crossings … The latest snafu, involving track gauge, raises questions about the crossings’ design as HART struggles to make their components fit together.
Honolulu rail officials have identified yet another worrisome flaw in the track crossings along the transit line’s western half: The spaces between the rails at those checkpoints are too slim, leading to potential safety hazards if they’re not fixed.
Project consultants are currently trying to determine exactly how this latest snafu, involving so-called “track gauge,” might affect the future rail system, Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation Executive Director Lori Kahikina told the agency’s board members Friday.
However, a situation in which the track width is too slim and their space tolerances too tight could potentially cause a derailment in a worst-case scenario, she said.
