April 2018 Rainfall Breaks National Record
HONOLULU (AP) — The National Weather Service says the torrential downpours that flooded the Hawaiian island of Kauai last year set the national record for the most rainfall in a 24-hour period.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the weather service’s National Climate Extremes Committee issued a memorandum Wednesday, confirming the new record set by the heavy rains that hit the island’s northern and eastern sides.
The weather service says the rain gauge in Waipa recorded 49.7 inches (126.2 centimeters) during the period that ended at 12:45 p.m. on April 15.
The amount broke the previous record of 43 inches (109 centimeters) recorded July 25-26, 1979, near Alvin, Texas.
The April rains resulted in flooding that caused millions of dollars in damage to the island’s roads, homes and infrastructure.
