Volunteers headed to Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island and Kauai shorelines on Saturday to count humpback whales in the second to last count of the 2023 season. Whether under blue skies or cloudy conditions, most sites experienced strong winds and moderate swells that made for challenging observation, according to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

    • Total numbers of humpback whale observed from each island were 232 on Oahu, 105 on Hawaii Island and 64 on Kauai
    • Maui volunteers counted 596 whales in the Great Whale Count
