An agreement between Maui County and the state will allow students to physically attend Kulanihakoi High School on Maui as soon as construction is completed and the state Department of Education sets an opening date, tentatively projected to be in time for the start of the 2023-24 school year, Gov. Josh Green announced Wednesday.

What You Need To Know

    • The agreement calls for the Land Use Commission to issue a temporary certificate of occupancy to the DOE, in exchange for the state temporarily indemnifying the county
    • This will allow students in South Maui to access the new school, which is being built in phases, while the DOE continues to work toward fulfilling a Land Use Commission requirement that it build an elevated pedestrian crosswalk, which is needed for a permanent certificate of occupancy
    • DOE estimates that construction of the crosswalk will take three years to complete, at a cost of more than $25 million.
  • DOE deputy superintendent Curt Otaguro said the department is optimistic that the school will be ready to welcome students this August.
