HONOLULU — On Friday, David Matlin gathered the final five things from his Lower Campus office: a plaque of an executive award for his father, pictures of his parents and of his wife and children, a Hawaii Islanders baseball bat, and a pen.

With that, his tenure as the 23rd Hawaii athletic director was over.

“You know, in some ways it was a long eight years and in some ways it was a short eight years,” Matlin told Spectrum News in a phone interview Friday night.
