NTSB: Hawaii Should Use Cameras to Catch Speeders
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The NTSB has a recommendations to make Hawaii’s road safer. And drivers probably aren’t going to like it.
The National Transportation Safety Board says the state should use automated speed enforcement. The agency says the tactic uses cameras to help catch those who speed, and reduced crashes by up to 51 percent in some places.
Hawaii is one of 28 states without automated speed enforcement.
NTSB is also recommending that Hawaii install seatbelts in large school buses and develop new training programs aimed at helping pilots navigate hazardous conditions and local weather phenomena.
The NTSB hopes their recommendations will help lawmakers improve transportation safety.
There was no immediate word on what the state plans to do with the recommendations, though speed cameras have failed in the islands in the past.
