Affordable rental community in Kihei taking applications Kaiwahine Village holds 120 units, amenities

Kihei’s new 120-unit affordable housing community Kaiwahine Village is accepting rental applications starting this week that must be submitted by 8 p.m. Saturday to be eligible for lottery selection Aug. 19.

In-person submissions are required, except for residents of Molokai, Lanai and Hana, who may call for instructions on how to apply.

To pick up and submit an “initial application,” visit the Maui Economic Development Board at Kihei Business Park’s Malcom Center, 1350 N. Holopono St., from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Friday or Saturday.

Kaiwahine Village, located at 55 Kaiwahine St. (the mauka end of Kaiwahine Street and the Hale Pi’ilani subdivision), will offer 64 two-bedroom units and 56 three-bedroom units.

Units will have Energy Star appliances, hard surface flooring, solar water heating, “water wise” plumbing fixtures and ceiling fans, according to the project website.

The village will include a community center with services and onsite management, a small playground for young children, picnic areas, laundry facilities and “ample” onsite parking.

Eligible families have incomes that are 60 percent or under the County of Maui average median income. The average median income at 60 percent includes the following family sizes: individual, $41,040; two, $46,860; three, $52,740; four, $58,560; five, $63,300; six, $67,980; seven, $72,660, according to a notice.

Applicants do not need to attend the lottery, which will be held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 19. Selections will be contacted within seven days, by Aug. 24, to be the first 118 applicants to be processed for move in.

Applications received after the deadline will be placed on a wait list by date and time received and may be handled only after all eligible applications have been processed.
