HPD Roadblocked Hwy 19
A 10 x 15 foot homeless encampment with plywood walls was found engulfed in flames under the Wailuku Bridge north abutment. It contained various household items, none of which were salvagable. Total loss estimated at $200. The bridge remains closed by HPD until it is inspected by DOT personnel. Traffic is being rerouted via Wainaku St,
Calls came in for smoke coming through the roadway of the Wailuku bridge/Highway 19. Often called the ‘Singing bridge’. Upon HFD arrival, personnel found an encampment within the superstucture of the north bridge abutment. This area is underneath the asphalt decking on the north approach. A variety of household items, including cooking appliances and a magnesium motorcycle engine, which is inextingishable by water, were on fire. Magnesium is highly reactive to water when burning. Central Fire Station and the Kaumana Fire personnel extinguished and overhauled the fire scene using foam and water. State Dept of Transportation personnel were on scene assessing the damage to the structure. The road remains closed by HPD until it is deemed safe to drive on.
