Greek Athlete Helps Disabled Woman Reach The Top Of Mount Olympus, Her Dream

A long distance runner helped fulfill a disabled woman’s dream by carrying her to the top of Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.

Marios Giannakou met Eleftheria Tosiou in September and the young woman expressed to Giannakou her desire to climb to the highest peak of Olympus.

“With Eleftheria we will try to climb next week to the highest peak in Greece, carrying her on my back with a specially modified backpack,” Giannakou wrote on Instagram. “If we succeed, she will become the first person with a disability to see Greece from its highest point.”

Giannakos carried Eleftheria for 10 hours in a specially-made backpack and climbed with an eight-member support crew.

At 9:02 am on October 5, Giannakos and Eleftheria reached the top of Greece.

Although Giannakos has trekked 168 miles across Al Marmoum Desert and 93 miles across frigid Antartica, this achievement meant so much more.

“For me, all international races, the medals and the distinctions so far, mean little compared to this goal.”
