Denby Fawcett: Bishop Museum Acknowledges Links To Past Racist Research In the 1920s, the museum invited anthropologist Louis R. Sullivan to study racial differences between so-called “pure” Hawaiians and Hawaiians of mixed ancestry.
In a new exhibition, the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum acknowledges that a research project it supported and funded in the early 1920s helped perpetuate scientific racism.
The presentation — called “(Re)Generations: Challenging Scientific Racism in Hawaii” — opens Feb. 20.
