Transforming Hawai‘i to a Healthier State
As more residents throughout the state get vaccinated, Hawai‘i has been able to refocus attention and resources on preventing, reducing and effectively managing chronic diseases to improve the health and wellbeing of Hawai‘i residents.

More than 200 individuals statewide recently gathered for a virtual summit to launch the Healthy Hawai‘i Strategic Plan 2030. The purpose: to create a roadmap to proactively address asthma, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and support those facing challenges with weight management.

Those with underlying, chronic health conditions are more affected by COVID-19 and this initiative helps to build more resilience among all Hawai‘i residents.

“Almost two-thirds of Hawai‘i residents are living with at least one chronic condition such as diabetes or heart disease, which diminishes their overall health and puts them at risk for severe illness from COVID-19,” said Health Director Dr. Elizabeth Char. “This pandemic has brought to the forefront the importance of chronic disease prevention and management; and has highlighted how inequities impact not only the health of individuals, but of our communities.”

As the name describes, the goal of the Healthy Hawai‘i Strategic Plan 2030 is to transform places where people live, learn, work, and play to make healthy choices the easiest choice by 2030. This will require changes in environments, policies and systems statewide to support wellness. To be a part of this exciting transformation, visit HHSP.hawaii.gov.
