Hawaii soccer team beats Seattle for first win in home opener

WAIPAHU, Hawaii — Barely a minute into Thursday night’s match, a perfectly crossed ball sailed in front of the Seattle University net with a Hawaii forward ready to receive and strike in the same motion.

Amber Gilbert whiffed on that chance as the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium crowd groaned, but the freshman and her Rainbow Wahine teammates redeemed themselves in short order. Gilbert and Eliza Ammendolia put away first-half goals and the Wahine held on, 2-1, over the Redhawks for their first victory of 2022, and first at home since 2019.
