DOH launches campaign to help children with asthma

HONOLULU — The Hawaii Department of Health has launched a new campaign to help parents help their children manage asthma.

“Control Asthma” identifies common asthma triggers and provides simple activities that parents can incorporate into daily routines to help their keiki.

    • “Asthma triggers vary from person to person, such as respiratory infections and environmental factors,” according to Dr. Brian Wu, Medicaid Medical Director at HMSA and Pediatric Pulmonologist at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children
  • The Asthma Action Plan helps parents help their children and is available at the campaign website, Control Asthma Hawaii

One in 13 children in Hawaii (7.7%) has asthma, according to 2020 data from the Hawaii Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. The number is higher than the national average (7.5%).

In 2019, asthma caused approximately 689 emergency visits and 66 hospitalizations in children 0 to 4 years of age in Hawaii.
