U.S. House of Representatives Republicans scored a legislative victory last week with the chamber’s passage of House Resolution 1, known as the Lower Energy Costs Act, but not without firm opposition from the Hawaii delegation.
What You Need To Know
The bill, dubbed the “Polluters Over People Act” by its detractors, proposes to ease restrictions on fossil fuel production and repealing certain provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act relating to environmental protections
Both representatives from Hawaii voted against the act.
The 225-204 vote mostly followed party lines, with just one Republican (Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania) breaking ranks, four Democrats voting in favor and six other Democrats not voting
Republicans secured important support early on from Texas Democrats Henry Cuellar and Vincente Gonzales, whose districts have traditionally been economically reliant on the oil and gas industries
