Official Report…613601 Kawaihae Rd Commercial Propane Leak

Found commercial Propane tank approximately 5000 gal (36000 GVW) rapidly venting from relief valve on Kawaihae harbor. High temperatures and light winds blowing the gas towards the busy highway direction.
Harbor workers and civilians evacuated at least 1/2 mile in all directions by HFD. HPD assist with traffic control and blocked hwy 19 and hwy 270. HFD maintain control of the scene and after 50 minutes the cylinder stopped venting. HAZMAT company made entry and checked for signs of gas accumulation and to make sure the atmosphere was not within any flammmabilty ranges. No fire or injuries were reported. The cause of the propane valve leak is under investigation. All traffic and businesses opened shortly after.
