1,690 Hawaii residents eligible for student loan relief

HONOLULU — Changes to the Biden administration’s Income-Driven Repayment plans have resulted in 1,690 Hawaii residents becoming eligible to have a total of $90.2 million dollars in student loan debt eliminated, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

“Thanks to the Biden administration, nearly 1,700 people across Hawaii will see thousands of dollars in student loan debt eliminated in the next few weeks,” said U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz. “It will save people money and give them some real relief on their student loans.”

    • Borrowers are eligible for forgiveness if they have accumulated the equivalent of either 20 or 25 years of qualifying months
    • The new debt discharges come after the Supreme Court’s effectively struck down President Joe Biden’s separate effort to provide full or partial student dept relief to up to 40 million Americans
  • The relief plan is based on a different law than the one that was invalidated by the court

Overall, more than 804,000 borrowers nationally will have a total of $39 billion in federal student loans discharged over the coming weeks.
