This is a Severe Weather Information Statement for Sunday, August 6th at 9 AM.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center reports Hurricane Dora entered the Central Pacific Basin Sunday morning. Hurricane Dora is located approximately 1,100 miles southeast of Hawaii Island, with sustained winds of 140 MPH and is steadily moving westward at 21 MPH.
At this time, Hurricane Dora is expected to pass safely south of Hawaii Island.
The National Weather Service is tracking a high pressure system northeast of Hawaii.
Due to this high pressure system, the National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch and a Fire Weather Watch for the Island of Hawaii in effect starting Monday morning.
Due to the High Wind Watch and Fire Weather Watch;
Expect very strong trade winds and gusts and dryer conditions to impact Hawaii Island on Monday and Tuesday.
Hawaii Island residents, please take this time now to secure outdoor items and avoid any outdoor activities that involve the use of fire or a fire ignition source.
Civil Defense will continue to monitor the situation.
