HAWAIʻI COUNTY REPORTS ADDITIONAL FIRES IN SOUTH KOHALA

Hawaiʻi County officials are reporting that two additional fires have broken out in the South Kohala area. The fires are in addition to the ongoing blaze that has threatened five neighborhoods in the Kohala Ranch area along Akoni Pule Highway. The new flare-ups are located near the Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beach areas. As a result of the new fires, Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway is closed between the 69-mile marker and the Kawaihae Road Junction. A total of four fires remain active, with three considered active threats.

Hawaiʻi Fire Department (HFD) crews are on the scene and working to contain the fires. Evacuations may be necessary, and individuals in and around the area should remain on high alert.

Shelters remain open at Hisaoka Park in Kapaʻau and Waimea Community Center in Kamuela. Additional shelters may be opened based on need. Shelters are pet friendly, though owners are expected to bring supplies for their animals.

The Lalamilo fire in Waimea has been contained.
