Sharing about our hana in Kawaihae
We have identified six practices that we believe are key to responsible stewardship of ʻāina: hoʻolauna (introduction), kilo (observation), hana (direct action), moʻolelo (storytelling and story catching), hoʻopaipai (daily practice), and ʻaha (ceremony). These practices emerged from a review of many years’ worth of conservation projects performed throughout Kohala and on-the-ground work in Kawaihae. We value any opportunity to be able to share our work with the Kohala community, and had the chance to do so last month through South Kohala Coastal Partnership’s Speaker Series. In a presentation entitled “Kohala Stewardship Practices and Honokoa Watershed Improvements,” Mia Akau-LaClair, director of Kohala papahana, and Kaimana Chock, ʻāina accountability pathways manager, highlighted these key practices, how we have activated them to improve ecosystem health across the Kawaihae 1/Honokoa watershed, and how these projects continue to influence our work throughout the ahupuaʻa ʻo Kawaihae. We invite you to check out the presentation, available on YouTube.
