Probe of Aug. 8 wildfires on Maui to take 12 months
Professional fire investigators hired by the state attorney general have been probing the policies and performance of the state and Maui County during the Aug. 8 wildfires that killed at least 115 and displaced about 4,300 people.
State Attorney General Anne E. Lopez announced Thursday the selection of the Fire Safety Research Institute, a nonprofit research organization, as the third party that would handle the state’s investigation.
She told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in an interview that the state contracted with Underwriters Laboratories Inc.’s FSRI to ensure “a completely independent investigation.”
