New sources help Hawaii soccer team defeat CSUN to open Big West play

WAIPAHU, Hawaii — A one-game week against a winless team served its purpose for the Hawaii soccer team.

With some key players sidelined with injuries, the Rainbow Wahine turned to new sources of offense in a 2-1 victory over Cal State Northridge in the teams’ Big West season opener at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.

That UH (2-2-2 overall) did what it was expected to do — keep a struggling team like CSUN (0-8-1) down — didn’t factor into the upbeat post-game vibe. UH coach Michele Nagamine will take the three points toward postseason tournament qualification without hesitation.

UH was picked to finish seventh in the conference, one spot out of the six-team BWC tournament. The Wahine finished seventh last year after similarly winning their league opener at home.
