From Invasion to Restoration: Healing Kohala’s Watershed
We are pleased to share that during our most recent visit to a 600-acre watershed protection unit on the top slopes of windward Kohala, no pig activity was observed. Members of our field crew completed fencing this unit nearly two years ago. After the fence was installed, the project’s goals included removing invasive pigs and drastically reducing the presence of Himalayan ginger in the unit, with the ultimate goal of improving the health of the watershed and all of the native cloud forest species that reside there. They also observed a large number of young native seedlings sprouting up along old pig trails. Our crew will be able to focus on removing invasive weed species now that the unit is pig-free, allowing this ecosystem to regenerate and flourish. Cleaner forests provide cleaner, more abundant water to our community.
