Kipapa Ballroom Fire. DOFAW estimates it has burned 260 acres and reports the fire is 35% contained.
A 17-person firefighting crew from the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), provided suppression support this afternoon for the wildfire burning at Mililani-Mauka. They were supported by four additional personnel handling logistics and operations. In addition to the line team, DOFAW provided a contract helicopter to conduct water drops on the fire. The fire is not burning on State forest lands, but DOFAW has mutual aid agreements with the Honolulu Fire Dept., and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which has the Oahu Forest National Wildlife Refuge in the area. The DOFAW crew hiked and drove out of the area after dark, after spending the afternoon building fire line. Ryan Peralta, DOFAW Oahu Branch Forestry Management Supervisor, describes the teams activities.
