Hawaiʻi Wildfire Summit Held on Hawaiʻi Island

The Hawaiʻi Fire Department (HFD) this week is teaming up with partners from across the state at the Hawaiʻi Wildfire Summit, a multi-agency gathering held on Hawaiʻi Island to tackle the pressing challenges of wildfire prevention and preparedness.

Hosted by the Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization, with support from HFD and other agencies, the two-day event (Feb. 27-28) at the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa brings together emergency responders, experts, and the broader community to advance strategies for increasing wildfire resilience.

“This summit is an opportunity to unite with our partners, learn from each other, and build stronger, more resilient communities,” said County of Hawaiʻi Mayor Kimo Alameda. “As the threat from wildfires increases, it is more important than ever that we strengthen our partnerships and tackle these challenges together.”

The sold-out summit includes more than 300 registered participants. Attendees include community members, and representatives from fire departments, firewise teams, the National Weather Service, utilities, and other county, state and federal agencies.

“It is all of our kuleana to adapt, strengthen our preparedness, and work together across agencies and communities,” said HFD Fire Chief Kazuo Todd. “The Hawaiʻi Wildfire Summit is a critical step in this effort, bringing together the knowledge, experience, and partnerships necessary to protect our people and our ʻāina.”

Sessions at the summit feature experts addressing topics such as community resilience; fire and emergency services; land management and wildfire resilience; advancing fire-adapted communities; and more.
