Aloha E Alu Pū, Hui Mālama Loko Iʻa and the Limu Hui,

This communication is both a kāhea and informational notice of upcoming community efforts at Kaʻūpūlehu, Hawaiʻi that you may want to pay attention to and learn from over the next year or so. Community fishery management can take many forms and though CBSFA are at the core to the spirit of our efforts there are other forms of place-based policymaking and management that can be pursued by community like what is being done at the Kaʻūpūlehu Marine Reserve.

The Kaʻūpūlehu “Try Wait” 10 years rest period, proposed by the Kaʻūpūlehu Marine Life Advisory Committee is coming to an end in 2026. A number of E Alu Pū members came to the public hearing to support and or learn from the KMLAC community leader efforts back in 2016. Since the rest areas establishment in 2022, TNC conducted a 6 year study which showed key fish population increase and diversity within the area.  The hope is to open up and to begin managing the fishery from a state of abundance.

As promised back when the rest period began community efforts are starting discussions on the development of a fishery management plan and rules for the area as it opens up. These efforts are now being led by Hui Kahuwai a new non-profit established by long time Native Hawaiian community leaders of the KMLAC including our own Hannah Springer and Kaikea Nakachi.

Please see further information on a scoping session for the Kaʻūpūlehu Fishery Management Plan. There are zoom options for those of you outside of Hawaiʻi Island who want to listen in and learn. This is just the first step in an effort that will continue through the year and the next.

Please pass this on to friends, family and connections on Hawaiʻi who may have an interest.

Mahalo,
Kuaʻāina Ulu ʻAuamo
