…HIGH SURF ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM HST THURSDAY FOR EXPOSED NORTH AND WEST FACING SHORES… …MINOR COASTAL FLOODING DURING HIGH TIDE THIS WEEK FOR LOW LYING COASTAL AREAS OF ALL ISLANDS… .A large north-northwest medium period swell will build into the Hawaiian Islands through Thursday increasing surf heights above advisory thresholds along exposed north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, including north facing shores of Maui and the Big Island. Surf heights will likely fall below advisory thresholds by Thursday night as the swell energy decreases. Peak monthly high tides combined with water levels that are running higher than predicted will lead to minor flooding along the shoreline and in low-lying coastal areas. Coastal flooding is possible around the daily peak tide, which will be during the early morning hours. * WHAT…For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 12 to 18 feet along north facing shores and 8 to 12 feet along west facing shores. Avoid driving through flooded roadways. If you are forced to drive through salt water, be sure to rinse your vehicle with fresh water. Move electronics, vehicles or other valuables to higher ground. Monitor vessels to ensure mooring lines don’t get too tight and watch out for overwash around boat ramps. Secure canoes or other watercraft stowed on beaches. Heed all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.
