Evacuation Order Lifted for Kawaihae Village Subdivision, Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway Reopened
The evacuation order for Kawaihae Village Subdivision has been lifted, and Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway has been reopened as emergency responders continue to attack a wildland fire.
The fire has burned about 680 acres on the south side of Kawaihae Road and is about 50% contained. Kawaihae Road from Waiula Drive to Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway remains closed. For access to Kawaihae Harbor and Akoni Pule Highway, a detour has been established through Kohala Ranch Road.
“Our firefighters, road crews, and partners are working closely to protect our community, and some roadblocks remain in effect so that they can continue to operate safely as the fire remains active,” said Mayor Kimo Alameda. “While the evacuation order has been lifted, we ask that residents continue following all emergency messages and we will provide updates as soon as they are available.”
The wildland fire was reported at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday and the Hawaiʻi Fire Department (HFD) responded with brush trucks, tankers, fire engines and helicopters. On Sunday morning, a fire break was being completed, and HFD helicopters were conducting water drops, with assistance from the Hawaiʻi National Guard. About 30 HFD personnel are on scene.
