The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Lala to a Category 1 Hurricane and has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the windward side of Hawaii Island, from North Kohala to Ka`u District.
A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.
Rain is reported falling at a rate of 1 to 2.5 inches per hour.
Due to Hurricane Lala and the Flash Flood Warning, be advised:
- Heavy rains and flooding will continue throughout today.
- Flooding is life-threatening.
- All residents in flood-prone areas are asked to remain on the alert for possible flooding conditions. Move to high ground as necessary.
- Multiple roadways are closed due to landslides, downed trees, and utility lines.
- Widespread power outages are being experienced across Hawaii Island.
- Due to these conditions, The Mayor’s Office and Civil Defense ask that you continue to shelter-in-place and stay off the roads until the hurricane passes.
