This is a Civil Defense Tropical Storm Lala Update for Friday 08-14-2026 06:11 PM.

The National Hurricane Center reports that Tropical Storm Lala is 230 miles east-southeast of Hilo, moving at 12 MPH toward Hawaii Island with sustained winds of 65 MPH.

The effects of Tropical Storm Lala is here. At this time, you should have completed your storm-ready preparations and focusing on your Sheltering Plan.

If your home is well built and not threatened by tall trees, you may want to shelter-in-place.

Public Shelters are available and are open today at 6 PM, in every district across Hawaii County. Shelter locations are:

Hisaoka Gym in North Kohala, Waikoloa Elementary School Cafeteria, Kahilu Town Hall in Waimea, Honoka`a Sports Complex Gym (correction), Laupahoehoe Charter School Band Room, Waiakea High School Gymnasium in Hilo, Kea`au Armory, Pahoa Community Center, Pahala Gymnasium, Na`alehu Elementary School Gymnasium, Yano Hall in Captain Cook, and Kealakehe High School Gymnasium in North Kona District.

If you plan to wait out the storm at a public shelter, please bring your own food, personal and sleeping supplies and arrive at the shelter before tropical storm force winds occur in your area.

If you have pets, make sure they have pet food and they are in a kennel or crate.
