Green Waste Fire…Ola’a Reservation Lots in Glenwood off Hwy 11 across Mauna Kea Dr Report
Thursday 10/22/2020 11:40pm
9 HFD apparatus, 15 HFD personnel
At scene found mix of native and nonnative trees and roots bulldozed into 15+ large mounds-roughly 750-1500 cubic yards-that were intentionally lit on fire. Approx 8-9 mounds with active burning, 7 previously burned and ~7 more mounds unburned.
Landowner intentionally lit the mounds.
Due to inaccessability and lack of water source, mounds were allowed to burn with units monitoring closely to prevent fire spread into unburned mounds or surrounding forest. One unit remained at scene to provide night watch and monitor the fires overnight. HPD brought enforcement action against the owner of the property.
It is a reminder that the DoH does not allow any burning without a burn permit, with the exception of small, residential cooking fires. DoH fines are up to $10,000 per day, per violation. Additional details may be found at the Department of Health website.
Approx 2 acres of bulldozed vacant land located at the bottom of unnamed road across Mauna Kea Dr in Glenwood off of Highway 11.
