The Maui Planning Commission voted unanimously to grant Project District Phase II Development approval to the long-embattled Honuaula housing project.

The commission’s approval came seven months after two community groups, Maui Tomorrow and Hooponopono O Makena, stepped forward as interveners in a contested case over the proposed project
The groups argued that Honuaula Partners should be held to affordable housing ordinances in effect when it received initial Phase I Developmental Approval nearly 15 years ago
The commission upheld Honuaula’s position that the project only needed to meet the current standard of 25% of units
