As of 5:00 am this morning Tropical Storm Moke was located approximately 470 miles southeast of Hilo and moving in a west-northwest direction at 12 mph. Currently Moke is producing sustained winds of up to 50 mph with higher gusts and tropical storm force winds extending outward from the center up to 115 miles. Some strengthening is expected today followed by a gradual weakening of the system beginning tomorrow. On the current track, Moke is expected to pass to the south of Hawaii Island beginning tonight and into tomorrow morning.
Hawaii Island residents and businesses are encouraged to continue with preparations for strong winds and gusty conditions as well as heavy rains and possible flooding. Please anticipate interruptions in power and communication and hazardous road conditions. All preparations should be completed before nightfall.
Residents and businesses in flood prone areas especially those impacted by Hurricane Lala are advised to prepare for possible additional flood impacts and consider evacuating the area before storm conditions begin.
Shelters will be opened later today, and the locations or sites of the shelters will be communicated in future messages.
