U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele, D-Hawaii, reiterated his support of the Access to Breast Cancer Diagnostics Act of 2021 and called on his Congressional colleagues Monday to help make breast cancer diagnostic tests affordable and accessible to all.

What You Need To Know

    • Diagnostic tests may be required following an initial screening for breast cancer
    • U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele notes that such tests “are rarely covered by insurance providers and can cost an average of $250 in out-of-pocket expenses”
    • House Resolution 5729 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s subcommittee on health but has not yet been heard
  • The bill would prevent insurers from imposing higher cost-saving requirements on diagnostic examinations than they would on initial screening exams

“We know that early detection of breast cancer saves lives,” Kahele said. “Congress must do everything in its power to eliminate barriers to care like costly copays, deductibles and additional out-of-pocket expenses that are often associated with breast cancer diagnostic exams. No one should be denied a potentially life-saving test simply because it is not affordable.”
