AARP: Kupuna make up nearly half of Hawaii homeless population

HONOLULU — Nearly half of all homeless adults in Hawaii are age 45 or older, according to an analysis of U.S. Census data conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons.

    • That number of homeless adults in the state is likely to increase this year as it’s projected that an estimated 1,820 Hawaii residents age 45 or older will be to be evicted
    • The estimated number of evictions in the state for 2022 is 3,906
    • Oahu has the highest overall number of homeless adults, with 3,932, followed by Hawaii County (536), Maui (463) and Kauai (463)
  • The study further found that evictions and homelessness disproportionately affect adults 44 and younger and 65 and older.

The total number of homeless adults in the state is 5,116, of which 2,352 are 45 or older.
