This is a Civil Defense Message for Friday 08-21-2026 at 06:48 PM.

The National Hurricane Center reports Tropical Storm Moke is located approximately 595 miles southeast of Hilo, moving west-northwest at 12 MPH, with sustained winds of 45 MPH. A Flood Watch for the Island of Hawaii goes into effect late Saturday, as conditions for flash flood may occur.

As strong winds and heavy rains are forecast to impact Hawaii Island starting as early as tomorrow night, Civil Defense requests the following:

  • Hawaii Island residents and businesses, to please take this time to prepare for possible bad weather.
  • If your area is prone to flooding or your location is unsafe, please consider relocating to a safer location before storm conditions begin.
  • Shelters will be designated as safe places and you will be provided with those locations in or near your community in future messages.

The Department of Public Works reports access to Green Sands, and the Wood Valley Access Road are open.

The Department of Water Supply continues their restoration efforts and temporary water sources in affected areas. The Precautionary Boil Water Notice is cancelled for Pahala but remains in effect for Na‘alehu and Waiohinu residents.

Department of Health asks all residents of Hawaii Island to stay out of flood waters and all standing water, as they pose a possible health threat.

Solid Waste Transfer Stations and Landfills are operational. The Pahala, Waiohinu, and Ocean View Solid Waste Transfer Stations are open 7-days a week until further notice. For residents in Na‘alehu, roll-off containers have been placed at the ʻO Kaʻū Kākou Market, for residential waste and bulky items.

The Robert N. Herkes Gymnasium in Pahala has charging stations and hot showers available from 9am-5pm daily.
