Hawaii high school longest championship streaks by sport, 2022-23
Many state title streaks endured in the Hawaii high school 2022-23 athletic calendar. Others fell by the wayside.
The most notable run to come to an end happened in one of the last events of the calendar: water polo. Last year, Punahou renewed its dominance with a 13th straight title in the pool after two years of canceled state tournaments, but on May 15 their young team succumbed to a more experienced Kamehameha squad that played with an emotional edge. In fact, including ILH play, the Warriors handed the Buffanblu their first losses in the sport in over than a decade, a streak spanning well over 100 matches.
End of a dynasty? Hardly. The result left legendary Buffanblu coach Ken Smith thirsty for more.
“Gotta go for it,” said Smith, 76, moments after the Warriors raised the koa trophy.
