Gov. Josh Green issued an emergency proclamation on Thursday to address shortages of bus drivers for the state Department of Education and certain independent schools on Oahu and Kauai.

What You Need To Know

    • Shortages have to date forced the suspension or partial suspension of school bus service to 10 high schools on Oahu (affecting approximately 1,130 students) and four on Kauai (250 students)
    • The order provides for the use of vehicles other than designated school vehicles to transport students to school and allows the state to hire drivers who possess a commercial driver’s license with a “P” endorsement (which allows driving vehicles with passengers) in lieu of those who possess a CDL with “S” (specific for driving school buses) designation
    • More than 200 drivers are needed to fully staff school bus routes statewide
  • Because of the shortage, affected Oahu schools have been transitioned to the city’s public bus system for student transportation for the upcoming school year. Four schools on Kauai have also had to rely on county transportation via the Kauai Bus
