During the week of March 25, 2019, through April 3, 2019, Hawaiʻi Island Police arrested twenty-one, (21), motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 305 DUI arrests compared with 286 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.6 percent.

There have been 246 major accidents so far this year compared with 336 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26.8 percent.

To date, there were 5 fatal crashes, resulting in 5 fatalities, compared with 6 fatal crashes, resulting in 7 fatalities, (one of which had multiple deaths), for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 16.7 percent for fatal crashes and 28.6 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
