MAYOR ROTH ENCOURAGES RESIDENT PARTICIPATION AT HELCO RESILIENCE FAIR

Mayor Mitch Roth is urging residents, particularly those in high-risk wildfire areas, to attend Hawaiian Electric’s Community Resilience Fair on Monday, August 19, 2024. The event will occur at Kealakehe High School from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

As we enter hurricane season and face dry summer months, it is crucial that our communities are well-prepared for potential power outages and other emergencies. Hawaiian Electric, alongside various partners, is dedicated to helping residents plan and prepare for these possibilities to ensure safety and resilience across our island.

The Community Resilience Fair will offer valuable information and resources to help residents understand how to protect their homes and families during emergencies. A particular focus will be placed on the potential for Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in areas at higher risk of wildfires. These shutoffs may be necessary to prevent fires during extreme weather conditions, impacting areas such as Kohala (below the 18-mile marker), Waikōloa, Kalaoa, Hōlualoa, and regions between Mauna Kea Access Road and Waiki‘i Ranch.

Residents are encouraged to use Hawaiian Electric’s website’s search feature to determine if their address may be affected by a power shutoff.

“We strongly encourage everyone, particularly those living in high-risk areas, to attend this event and learn about the protocols for Public Safety Power Shutoffs and other emergency measures,” said Mayor Roth. “Your safety is our top priority, and understanding these procedures will help ensure that our community is prepared and protected during critical situations.”
