  • A 65-year-old woman visiting from California reported being bitten by a shark off of Anaehoomalu Bay on Hawaii island’s west side this morning, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

She was bitten by a 5-foot blacktip reef shark, which is unusual, according to DLNR spokesman Dan Dennison.

“We’re not aware of a blacktip ever biting anybody,” said Dennison.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense said the attack occurred at about 8:30 this morning, and that beaches in the vicinity are closed until further notice. The popular bay is on Hawaii’s West shore near the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.

The Hawaii Fire Department airlifted the woman to North Hawaii Community Hospital. All adjacent beaches and hotels have been notified of the incident. The fire department will do a flyover later today to survey the area for the shark, said Dennison.
