HHSAA: Kohala’s Kekoa receives Hall call
If there was a Mount Rushmore of student-athletes for Kohala High school, they would be chiseling Mikayla Kekoa’s face on it as we speak.
The Hawaii High School Hall of Honor selection committee was able to imagine such a view in Kapaau.

Mikayla Kekoa enjoyed a high school career full of achievement, but her crowning moment was pitching Kohala to the state Division II championship game on Maui
The BIIF is represented in the 12-member HHSAA Hall of Honor class for the eighth consecutive year, and though there is only a single member this time – after having three selections in 2018 – Kekoa is a pioneer for the Cowgirls.
The senior perhaps saved her best work for last, leading Kohala to its first appearance in the state Division II softball tournament championship game earlier this month and a runner-up finish on Maui.
Kekoa played in four state softball tournaments, but her first foray into state competition came during her freshman year when she helped Kohala’s girls basketball team reach the semifinals and a fourth-place finish in 2016.
She’s also the reigning BIIF Division II girls volleyball player of the year after helping Kohala to its first league championship in 2018.
The inductees also include the first-ever athlete from Lanai, Naighel Calderon.
The Hall of Honor banquet will be held on June 2 at Dole Cannery’s Pomaikai Ballroom on Oahu.
