FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY MORNING
THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING…
The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Maui and the Big Island.

* From Thursday morning through Saturday evening

* An unstable airmass will move over the islands Thursday into the
weekend, bringing an increase in showers across the eastern
islands. While showers will be possible over most areas, the
areas most susceptible to flooding will be windward locations
which have already received rain this week.

* The extended period of rain could cause flooding in low spots
which could make some roadways impassable. Debris in streams and
gulches may clog bridges and culverts. Strong winds may cause
tree branches to fall which will potentially add to the amount
of debris.
Instructions: A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for flash flooding. Flash flooding is LIFE THREATENING. Do not cross fast flowing water in your vehicle or on foot. Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if a Flash Flood Warning is issued. If you experience heavy rain or rising water, head to higher ground immediately.
Target Area:
Big Island Interior
Big Island North and East
Haleakala Summit
Kohala
Kona
Leeward Haleakala
Maui Central Valley
Maui Leeward West
Maui Windward West
South Big Island

.A strong high pressure system northeast of the state will keep
very windy trades blowing across the islands through at least
Thursday. The strongest winds will be over and downslope of the
mountains.

…WIND ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM HST THURSDAY…

* WHAT…Northeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

* WHERE…Lanai, Kahoolawe, and portions of Maui, Oahu and the
Big Island. The strongest winds will be through gaps as well as
over and downslope of ridges. On Oahu this includes areas over
and downslope of the Koolau and Waianae ranges. On the Big
Island this includes areas over and downslope of the Kohala
mountains, as well as through the Saddle and around South Point.
On Maui this includes areas in and around Kahului southward
through Maalea Bay.

* WHEN…Until 6 PM HST Thursday.

* IMPACTS…Winds this strong can down tents, knock down tree
branches, make it difficult to steer high profile vehicles, and
can cause power outages.
Instructions: A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of at least 30 mph, or gusts of at least 50 mph, are expected. Motorists should use extra caution.
Target Area:

Kohala
Lanai Makai
Lanai Mauka

.Very strong trade winds near and upstream of the islands will
produce elevated and rough surf along east facing shores. Surf is
expected to continue building during the next few days, and may
reach the High Surf Warning criteria along east facing shores
Thursday and Friday.

…HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM HST FRIDAY…

* WHAT…Surf of 8 to 12 feet through tonight, then possibly
reaching the High Surf Warning threshold of 15 feet Thursday
and Friday.

* WHERE…East facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and
the Big Island.

* WHEN…Through Friday afternoon.

* IMPACTS…Moderate. Expect strong breaking waves, shore break,
and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming
difficult and dangerous.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…The combination of large surf, very strong
onshore winds and elevated ocean water levels will likely cause
significant wave runup and localized beach erosion along east
facing shores later this week, when full moon high tides
coincide with the elevated surf.
Instructions: Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials, and exercise caution. Know your limits and seek ocean recreation areas best suited for your abilities. When in doubt, don`t go out!
