Hawaii County Fire Department Vessel Aground Report
70′ (per the owner) sailing vessel found ran aground getting bashed by large surf with an undetermined number of souls on board. Boat was difficult to visualize up close due to location at the bottom of sheer cliffs.
A Fire Rescue Specialist from Waiakea Rescue Station was lowered from Rescue Chopper 1 onto the deck of the rocking vessel that teetered on rocks and being slammed by waves. There, fire personnel found a sole crew member who was safely extricated with the use of a Billy Pugh Net and lowered to the ground, where he was examined by Medical personnel from Central Fire Station. He denied the need for further medical attention or transport, but stated that he had just arrived from Los Angeles after spending 34 days at sea and didn’t even make it in to the Harbor.
