Malama Maunakea Mahalo!

Even with a bit of chill in the air, over 20 volunteers participated in OMKM’s Malama Maunakea community weed pull this past Saturday. Volunteers helped pull invasive plants around the Visitors Information Station, while also learning to identify seedlings of native species sprouting near the parking lot.
By the end of the morning, volunteers had filled 43 garbage bags of weeds!
A big Mahalo to all those volunteers who continue to help Malama Maunakea! The Malama Maunakea Volunteer weed pulls are part of OMKM’s ongoing efforts to protect the resources on the mountain. Controlling fireweed and other invasive plants around the Visitor Information Station helps to prevent the spread to other areas, in particular, the higher elevations including the summit region. Eradicating invasive weeds also helps reduce habitat for invasive ants and prepares the surrounding area for future native plant restoration projects.
