Ige signs bills on grant eligibility, kalo water use

Gov. David Ige signed into law last week two bills intended to clear unnecessary legal thicket in the name of common sense.

    • Senate Bill 172 allows organizations that are not incorporated in the state of Hawaii to apply for grants in aid as long as they spend at least 90% of their operating budget in Hawaii
    • House Bill 1768 exempts farmers from having to obtain a water lease for in-stream use of water to cultivate kalo
    • The governor praised state Department of Land and Natural Resources chair Suzanne Case for recognizing that those engaged in traditional and customary kalo farming should not be subject to water lease requirements
  • The governor said supporting the kalo industry also benefits the broader community by enhancing food production and supporting ecosystems through the flood mitigation and soil retention that kalo crops provide
