Two from Hawaii named to federal advisory group

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland named 17 people, including two Native Hawaiian representatives, to a newly established advisory group charged with helping to identify and recommend changes to derogatory geographic and federal land unit names.

    • Niniaukapealii Kawaihae, a special assistant with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, and Kamanaolana Mills, senior supervising project manager in Sustainable Industry Development for Kamehameha Schools, were selected to serve on the Advisory Committee on Reconciliation in Place Names
    • The committee, established by Secretary’s Order 3405 in 2021, will be responsible for developing a process to solicit and assist with proposals to the secretary to identify and change derogatory names
  • The Committee also includes four ex officio members from the federal government

Niniaukapealii Kawaihae, a special assistant with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, and Kamanaolana Mills, senior supervising project manager in Sustainable Industry Development for Kamehameha Schools, were selected alongside others representing tribes and tribal organizations, the general public and the fields of civil rights, history, geography and anthropology on the Advisory Committee on Reconciliation in Place Names.
