‘Hawk Week’ brings attention to the ‘Io, Hawaiian Hawk

HILO, Hawaii — A week of online presentations will be dedicated to the native io, Hawaiian hawk, during the first-ever “Hawk Week,” Oct. 9-15, 2022. The collaboration among conservation agencies and nonprofit organizations for the week-long event all started with repeated injuries to a single ‘Io named Maka‘io.

    • Hawk Week, Oct. 9-15, recognizes and celebrates the io, the state’s native Hawaiian hawk
    • The public can access the virtual talks and additional information via birdfesthawaii.org
    • Three-year-old Maka‘io, the inspiration behind Hawk Week, resides at the Hawaii Wildlife Center as an ambassador of his species
  • The USFWS, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and The ‘Alalā Project provided expertise in developing Hawk Week programming; the Office of Hawaiian Affairs is a primary supporter of the week-long event

Three-year-old Maka‘io is an ambassador for his species and has been a permanent resident at the Hawaii Wildlife Center in north Kohala since 2019. He is under the care of veterinarian Dr. Juan Guerra and his team.
