‘Hawk Week’ brings attention to the ‘Io, Hawaiian Hawk
HILO, Hawaii — A week of online presentations will be dedicated to the native io, Hawaiian hawk, during the first-ever “Hawk Week,” Oct. 9-15, 2022. The collaboration among conservation agencies and nonprofit organizations for the week-long event all started with repeated injuries to a single ‘Io named Maka‘io.
Three-year-old Maka‘io is an ambassador for his species and has been a permanent resident at the Hawaii Wildlife Center in north Kohala since 2019. He is under the care of veterinarian Dr. Juan Guerra and his team.
