Maui ‘talk story’ sessions announced for Holomua Initiative

HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources has scheduled three in-person events to kick off the Holomua Marine 30×30 community planning process. The agency invites everyone interested in marine resources — fishers, divers, surfers, cultural practitioners, kupuna, and other interested residents — to take part.

    • The DAR launched the Holomua Marine 30×30 to incorporate community input and run marine resources
    • The end goal is to establish at least 30% of each island’s nearshore waters as marine management areas by 2030
    • Community members are invited to attend one meeting in Wailuku, Lahaina and Hana
  • A recent survey over four in five Hawaii residents support marine management areas for each island, according to the DLNR release

The DAR launched the Holomua Marine 30×30 to incorporate community input and work together to manage marine resources. The end goal is to establish at least 30% of each island’s near-shore waters as marine management areas by 2030 to create healthy ecosystems and abundant resources.
